testostrogen
Testostrogen was presented at Pitt Street Theatre in Auckland, in February.
Testostrogen, by Joanna Pearce, tells the story of a man dealing with a powerful inclination to dress in women’s clothes and then making the decision to switch genders completely. Male to female transformation on stage!

“The story is so important and it is great to see a New Zealand perspective on the transgender journey. The Q&A at the end gave the audience a wonderful chance to learn from Joanna’s experiences and was very generous of her.”

“I felt a deep sense of satisfaction after viewing this play. There was something very real about sharing a personal story and I felt a connection with the characters because of this. Narelle Jackson who played the characters of both Pam and Rachel worked tirelessly throughout, providing a foil as the wife and a support as Stephanie’s boss. The play avoids focusing on too much negativity, discrimination or pain, and is presented in such a way that one may recognize the difficulties that the character faced without needing to witness them. This ensures that the play could be shown to a wide variety of audiences. It would be of particular interest to youth who are often struggling with their own identity confusion and for those who simply don’t understand what others go through.
I would like to see this production shown not only in Pride Festivals where there would be a deep appreciation of the content, but taken into a broader arena so that more people can be inspired and informed by all that it offers. ”
